The new 113,000-square-foot school building, which is designed to accommodate 950 students acts as a prototype for future districts to follow. With a host of innovations ranging from solar panels to a cistern for collecting rainwater, the school building has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and CHPS (Collaborative for High Performing Schools) certifications.

The school features a more hands-on experience for teachers, students and even parents. This includes interactive touch screens with easily accessible historical and up-to-the-minute information. Each grade level is located along its own corridor, and each hallway begins with a colorful mural illustrating ecosystems such as a deciduous forest, rainforest and desert. The murals are magnetized so that teachers can use them for interactive lessons.  The ecosystem theme continues through each grade level, with ceiling murals depicting aerial views of each natural system. Carpets and tiles are embedded with math lessons appropriate to each grade level, and central flex rooms overlook outdoors areas where gardens, hopscotch games and other activities are provided.  Natural sunlight floods the library, where models of planets hang from the ceiling, and over 10,000 books are arranged on movable carts with colorful nature photos.

"The entire building is designed to be a learning tool, with examples from nature and the environment used to support every curriculum, from math and science to reading," said Kathy Shealy, principal of Atascocita Springs Elementary.  District officials know of no other school in Texas that has achieved both high standards.
